About the museum

The Archaeological Museum of Chalkida “Arethousa” is housed in the former distillery and liquor factory “Arethousa S.A.”, an industrial building erected in 1902 that ceased operating in 1980. The building is a listed monument and lies in the Agios Stefanos district, near the harbour of classical and Roman Chalkida.

The conversion into a diachronic museum and the setting up of the permanent exhibition were funded by the ESPA programme and completed in 2020. The museum opened to the public in May 2021. The exhibition covers Euboea and Skyros from the Palaeolithic period to the early 20th century and is organised on three levels: ground floor, mezzanine and upper floor.

The narrative is thematic rather than strictly chronological. The sections cover political organisation, colonisation and the alphabet, the history of the building, economy, cultural identities and worship. Highlighted are the role of Skyros in trade and metalworking in the prehistoric Aegean, the prosperity of the settlement at Lefkandi in the 10th century BC, the spread of the Euboean alphabet to the West, the sanctuary of Artemis at Aulis, and the Venetian Negroponte and the Ottoman Egribos. Videos and multimedia applications accompany all sections.
