About the museum
The monastery of Zygos was the place of ascetic practice of Saint Athanasios the Athonite, founder of the Great Lavra, and is surrounded by a fortified wall with ten towers. In the 11th century it was one of the most important monasteries of Athos, but it was probably abandoned because of pirate raids.
After the redefinition of the boundaries of Mount Athos, the monastery remained outside its administrative limits, which is why women too are today admitted. In this quiet place visitors can see the cells, the bakery oven and the press, which bear witness to a traditional and arduous way of life lost in the depths of time.
