About the museum
The Prosforios Tower, formerly a metochion (dependency) of the Vatopedi monastery, lies beside the harbour of Ouranoupoli and is the largest and best-preserved tower in Chalkidiki. It probably originally belonged to a wider building complex and was completed in three phases: the Byzantine, the Ottoman and the more recent.
In 1924 the tower housed refugees from Asia Minor after the population exchange. In 1928 the couple Sydney and Joyce Loke moved into it; they revived the art of weaving in Ouranoupoli, secured an additional income for the refugee women and provided humanitarian assistance to the residents for 50 whole years.
On the ground floor, antiquities from Chalkidiki are displayed, while the upper floor is dedicated to the refugees of Ouranoupoli and to the Loke couple. According to the Ephorate of Antiquities, the tower remains temporarily closed due to restoration works.
