About the museum
The teaching collections of the museum began to be formed in the early 20th century under the care of professors of archaeology at the University of Athens. They are based on donations and loans from museums, ephorates of antiquities and private individuals. In 1941 the “Annex of the Teaching Collections of Archaeology” was set up, which in 1986 was renamed the Museum of Archaeology and History of Art.
In its present form, on the second and third floors of the building of the School of Philosophy, the museum was inaugurated in 1994. In 2004 the Archaeological Park began operating in a specially arranged area of the campus, which houses finds from the excavations of the 3rd Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities at Syntagma during the construction of the Metro. A conservation unit was added in 2010.
The museum has more than 8,000 objects, originals and copies, from prehistory to the modern era. The collections have a teaching character and serve the education of students of the Department of History and Archaeology. The museum also organises educational programmes for pupils, lectures and workshops for the general public.
