About the museum
The Museum of Palaeontology and Geology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens was founded in 1858. Since 1981 it has been housed in the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment on the Zografou campus. In 1998 the branch of the Vrissa Natural History Collection on Lesbos was created, which remains temporarily closed to the public after the earthquake of 2017. In 2010 a new hall for temporary exhibitions and educational programmes was added.
The collections, with around 8,500 objects, include fossils of vertebrates and invertebrates, plant fossils, rocks and minerals. Notable are the mammal fossils from the excavations at Pikermi and Megalopoli and the rare collection of Neogene molluscs of the Aegean. Geological maps, sections and three-dimensional models present the geological evolution of the Greek territory.
