About the museum
The Mouseio Dimokratias is a museum of the Ministry of Culture on a critical period of modern history, both politically and socially. Ai Stratis was chosen as its seat because from the early 1930s until 1943, and again from 1948 to 1963, the island was a place of exile for political prisoners.
The building was originally constructed as the island’s first school, and during the years of exile it was used as a convalescent home. The 1968 earthquake caused serious damage and the building was abandoned. Its restoration by the Service for Modern Monuments and Technical Works of the North Aegean of the Ministry of Culture began in 2005 and was completed in November 2007. The gathering of the exhibits and the organisation of the museum were undertaken by the Directorate of Modern Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture.
