About the museum
The EAM National Resistance Museum was inaugurated on 9 May 2016 and is run by the Municipality of Kaisariani within the grounds of the Kaisariani Shooting Range. The building was constructed in 1910 as a stable for military animals. From 1930 it was used by a shooting club with a 300-metre range. In the period 1942–1944 the site was used for the execution of about 700 fighters.
Kaisariani, a refugee district with a strong resistance tradition, was called “Little Stalingrad” during the occupation, because 49 battles between German forces and ELAS were fought on its boundaries.
The exhibition presents the history of the shooting range and the origin of Kaisariani’s refugee population, as well as a chronology of the Resistance from 1936 to 1944, with photographs and historical sources. A separate room is dedicated to Iro Konstantopoulou, a 17-year-old member of EPON who was executed in September 1944. The names of local fighters are inscribed on the walls, among them the 200 communists who were executed on May Day 1944. The museum also has a painting by Giorgos Vakirtzis entitled “The Executed” and a virtual tour.
