About the museum

The Costume Museum of Kastoria has been operating since 1999 and belongs to the musical-literary association “Armonia”. It is housed in the mansion of the Emmanouil brothers, a three-storey building from 1750 in the Ntoltso district, at the edge of the lake. The building is set at an angle because of the shape of the plot, and the façade shows the “eyebrows” around the stones, the work of the masons. Its owners, Panagiotis and Ioannis Emmanouil, were personalities who cooperated with Rigas Feraios in preparing the Revolution of 1821.

The ground floor, which served as a food store, is kept cool. On the first floor the costumes of the wider area of Kastoria are on display, including village clothing, and there is a secret room in the house. On the second floor the traditional costumes of the town are presented, among them the outfit that Queen Amalia chose to wear, the fez with the golden tassel, and the tzoumpa, a women’s outer garment lined with whole fur pelts. One room, decorated with vines and doves and with recesses in the walls, may have served as a private chapel during the Ottoman period. The exhibition gives an impression of the way of life of the inhabitants and of Kastoria’s relations with Europe and the rest of the world.
