About the museum
The Byzantine Museum of Kastoria was inaugurated in 1989 and operated in its original form until June 2013. Until then it housed a temporary exhibition of 35 portable icons in one of its three exhibition spaces. The responsible Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, prepared a new museological and museographic study, which was approved in 2010. The new permanent exhibition was inaugurated on 8 February 2016.
The museum is devoted exclusively to Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons. The exhibition includes 75 portable icons and iconostasis sanctuary doors, four sections of detached wall paintings and 50 minor art objects. The icons are presented in connection with the churches of Kastoria from which they come, so that the visit also leads to a walk among the city’s Byzantine monuments.
The exhibition emphasises the radiance of Kastoria, a regional but significant Byzantine and post-Byzantine city that flourished from the 9th to the 19th century. It also presents the social and economic context of the works, their donors and the techniques used to make an icon.
