About the museum
The Museum of the Macedonian Struggle of Kastoria is housed in the Pichees mansion, a two-storey 18th-century building in the Ntoltso district, near Ntoltso Square. The mansion was listed as a protected monument in 1965 and was the home of Anastasios Pichees, a teacher and fighter who was active in the Kastoria area at the end of the 19th century. He himself is considered one of the protagonists of the Macedonian Struggle in the area.
Creating a museum on the history of Macedonian Hellenism in Kastoria had been a goal for many years. In 1993 the Association of Friends of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle was founded. The Pichees family ceded the building to the Municipality of Kastoria, the restoration study was approved in 1999, and in 2005 the municipality granted the building to the association. The conversion into a museum was completed with supplementary funding from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, and the museum was inaugurated on 23 May 2010.
The exhibits include heirlooms of descendants of Macedonian fighters (Makedonomachoi), photographs from the early phase and the period of the Macedonian Struggle, uniforms of Macedonian fighters and traditional Kastorian costumes. The building also has a library, a reading room, a screening room and a courtyard that is available for events and lectures.
