About the museum
The Tsiatsiapas Mansion dominates the Apozari district of Kastoria, in front of the lake. According to a carved inscription, it was built in 1754 for the nobleman Moralis and later passed to the nobleman and benefactor Tsiatsiapas, from whom it takes its name. It is the only surviving three-storey mansion of its kind in the town and belongs to the earliest type A of Kastorian mansions.
Its architecture follows the models of 18th-century Macedonian mansions, with a harmonious combination of stone and wood and an alternation of closed and open spaces for sleeping, eating, receiving guests and entertainment. The stone-built ground floor and the mezzanine housed storage and service rooms, while the first and second floors held the living quarters.
On the top floor a rich painted and carved wooden decoration of 1798 survives, combining elements of local tradition, Western European Baroque and Rococo art, and Oriental art. After the restoration works were completed in 2013, the mansion became a visitable monument and hosts educational and cultural activities. On the ground floor, models of dozens of Kastorian mansions are on display.
