About the museum
In 1986 the Hellenic Air Force General Staff set up an organisation office for a future air force museum, which from 1988 began to gather material for the collection. In July 1992 the Supreme Air Council officially established the Hellenic Air Force Museum as a unit of the Air Force, based at Dekelia Air Base. Since April 2021 the museum has been subordinate to the Hellenic Air Force General Staff.
The museum is at the same time an aviation, military and technology museum and belongs to the category of historical and technological museums. Its mission is to collect, preserve and display the heirlooms of the Air Force, as well as to study and document its history.
The museum's projects include the recovery of wreckage of Second World War aircraft, such as a British Blenheim Mk.I from Mikri Prespa in 1993 and a Blenheim Mk.IV F from the waters off Rethymno in 1996. The collection also includes vehicles of museum character, such as a Second World War Dodge ambulance, a Willys Jeep and a Norton motorcycle.
