About the museum
The museum’s collection began in 1991, when Filio Chaidemenou, a native of Asia Minor, started gathering relics from refugees who had saved objects during the Asia Minor Catastrophe of 1922. Despite her advanced age, she worked persistently to create the space that would keep their memory alive.
The museum first opened in the late 1990s in the old town hall building of Nea Filadelfeia. After the great earthquake of 1999 the building suffered serious damage and the exhibits were withdrawn. A few years later the museum was housed in the building of the World Cultural Foundation of Hellenism of the Diaspora “Andreas Papandreou” of the Municipality of Nea Filadelfeia–Nea Chalkidona. The museological and museographic study of the new exhibition was undertaken by the Directorate of Modern Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture.
In the exhibition, visitors learn about the history of Asia Minor Hellenism not only through historical and diplomatic events, but also through personal testimonies of people who lived through them, everyday objects and photographs. The collection includes personal items of refugees, family heirlooms, costumes, church vessels, documents, maps and photographs.
