About the museum
The Archaeological Collection of Acharnes has been housed since 2006 at 76 Filadelfeias Avenue, in a central location in the town, opposite the town hall and close to the Mycenaean tholos tomb of Acharnes. The antiquities on display come from rescue excavations on private plots and in public works, as well as from donations by citizens. They come mainly from Acharnes, but also from neighbouring municipalities such as Kifisia, Agioi Anargyroi and Metamorfosi, and cover all phases of habitation from the late Neolithic period, around 4600 BC, to the Middle Byzantine period of the 12th century AD.
In the vestibule are displayed a pointed-base storage jar of the Roman period, a funerary stele of the 4th century BC with the names of members of Acharnian families, and a cast of a funerary stele depicting a hoplite and two women, whose original is kept in the National Archaeological Museum. In the main hall the display cases follow chronological order: prehistoric finds, Geometric-period vessels with characteristic shapes and decoration, Archaic and Classical vessels with black-figure scenes, and a red-figure krater of 470–460 BC with a winner in the javelin of the pentathlon. Grave goods from necropolises are also exhibited, including black- and white-ground lekythoi, a louterion with a child burial of the 5th century BC and finds from the sanctuaries of Dionysus and Aphrodite.
In the centre of the hall, Classical and Hellenistic stone sculptures are arranged, such as funerary stelai, lekythoi and loutrophoroi, as well as the funerary stele of a key-bearing priestess of the 4th century BC. The educational material of the collection concerns the history of Acharnes and the neighbouring areas of Parnitha.
