About the museum
The Istoriko kai Laografiko Mouseio Acharnon was founded in 1977 by the Ellinikos Oreivatikos Syllogos Acharnon and in 1981 was handed over to the Istoriki kai Laografiki Etaireia Acharnon (I.L.E.A.), founded the same year. It is housed in the old town hall of Acharnes, in the central square of the town.
The four halls of the museum present objects from 1700 to 1950 that relate to the lives of the people of the area, which has always been bound up with the highest mountain in Attica, Parnitha. Documents, photographs, weapons, tools, costumes, jewellery, religious and agricultural objects are displayed in cases or projected digitally on screens.
The museum preserves the more recent history of Acharnes, a town whose history begins, according to archaeological finds, as early as 4600 BC. The ancient deme of Acharnes was the most populous in Attica, as Thucydides reports, while Aristophanes’ Acharnians is an important source for its residents. The modern history of the town culminates in the participation of the Menidiates in the struggle of 1821 and in the subsequent national struggles.
