About the museum
Pyrgos Vasilissis is the royal villa of the estate that Queen Amalia created north of Athens, near today’s Liosia. The estate at Ilion was originally a Turkish chiftlik (estate) and gradually passed to Greek owners and then to the English owners John Williams and George Miles, who planted vineyards and fruit trees. Amalia turned it into a model centre of agriculture and livestock farming, with a final area of 2,500 stremmata in 1861, and gave it the name “Eptalofos”.
The tower was built on the site of an older tower. It is a building in Gothic style, which imitates Hohenschwangau Castle in Bavaria. The two buildings share common features in their exteriors, such as polygonal towers, battlements and arched windows, as well as in their interiors.
After the 1999 earthquake the tower suffered considerable damage. Restoration works began in 2003 and were completed in 2009, and the monument then opened to the public. Today it can be visited only on organised guided tours.
