About the museum
The Oinousses Maritime Museum was founded in 1965 as an association, to house ship models, paintings, nautical instruments, documents and books relating to the island’s maritime tradition. All the original objects came from donations by Oinousses families.
The museum is housed in the Mansion of Pantelis Ant. Laimos, on the seafront road, very close to the harbour. The building is also a gift from the Laimos family. Antonis Laimos, mayor of the island, had envisaged the renovation and extension of the museum, and his brother Nikolaos Laimos realised this vision. Since 1991 the museum has operated in its present form, with new collections.
The exhibition follows the development of Oinousses shipping, from the 19th-century sailing ships and the transition to steam to the Liberty ships and modern vessels. The most valuable collection includes ship models, a donation by Antonis Laimos, made by French prisoners held by the English after the Napoleonic Wars. The museum also has a library and an event hall, the “Marina Laimou” hall.
