About the museum
The Olympic Museum Thessaloniki was founded in 2001 under the name Museum of Sport, on the initiative of the Ministry of Culture and the Special Secretariat for Sport of Macedonia–Thrace, in cooperation with sports federations and local government bodies. It was initially housed on Aristotelous Street, in a listed neoclassical building.
In March 2004 it moved to the present modern building of 4,500 m² at the junction of Agiou Dimitriou Street and 3rd September Street, near the Kavtanzoglio Stadium and the Aristotle University. The building was inaugurated on 5 August 2004 by the then IOC President Jacques Rogge.
In 2008 the museum was recognised by the International Olympic Committee and renamed the Olympic Museum. It is a founding member of the World Network of Olympic Museums and a member of ICOM. Its purpose is to collect, document and present the history of sport and the Olympic heritage, with an educational and interactive character.
