About the museum
The Sarakatsaniki Stani is located at Gyftokampos, in the area of Skamneli in Zagori, about ten kilometres from the village. It was created on the initiative of the Brotherhood of Sarakatsani of Epirus, on a forest area of about 20 stremmata with fir and pine trees, which was granted to the Brotherhood by the Ministry of Agriculture.
On the site a complex has been built that reproduces as faithfully as possible the environment of Sarakatsani life. It includes a museum hall, seven huts, that is old little houses of Sarakatsani livestock farmers, and other buildings, such as konakia, a sheepfold, a strouga, a loom, a cheese dairy, a teacher’s hut and a small church. All of them also function as museum space.
Nomadic and semi-nomadic livestock farming was the fundamental feature of Sarakatsani life, who moved from the mountain masses of Pindos to the plains of Epirus and Aetolia-Acarnania. On the site there is also a canteen hall, a chapel and a paved event area with a canopy. Since 1979 the Pan-Epirot gathering of the Sarakatsani has been held here every year, on the first weekend of August.
