About the museum
The Metsovo Folk Art Museum, also known as “The Mansion”, has been in operation since 1955 and is one of the first projects of the Baron Michael Tositsa Foundation in Metsovo. It is housed in the rebuilt ancestral mansion of the Tositsa family, well-known benefactors of the town, which was originally built in 1661.
The museum follows the philosophy of the “open museum”: objects are displayed in their natural setting, in the rooms, stables, storerooms and large salons of the mansion. Visitors can thus see how a Metsovite mansion was organised and functioned in the period of the town’s great economic prosperity.
The collections include weapons and swords from the Greek War of Independence (1821), copper and wooden vessels, jewellery, costumes, silverware, gold-embroidered saddles, chests, farm tools, looms and textiles, as well as 66 icons from the 15th to the early 20th century and Byzantine metalwork. In 1991 the apartment of Evangelos Averoff was opened on the third floor, with personal objects and photographs from his life.
