About the museum
Angelokastro is built on the summit of the highest point of the north-western coast of Corfu, at an altitude of 300 metres. Its western side needed no fortification, since the rocks there are almost vertical; from its position the southern Adriatic is overseen, and for this reason it is regarded as one of the most important Byzantine castles in Greece.
It is thought to have taken its name from Michael I Angelos Doukas Komnenos, despot of Epirus. In 1272 it passed to the Angevins, while during Venetian rule (1386–1797) it was the seat of the local governor, the castellan.
On the highest point stands the church of Archangel Michael, which, according to an inscription on the lintel, was rebuilt in 1734 by the castellan Aloisio Reggini. Carved almost into the rock is the chapel of Agia Kyriaki, with 18th-century frescoes. From the site the view covers the whole western part of the island.
