About the museum
The founding of the School Museum was the life’s dream of the teacher Priftis, who taught for 35 years. He wanted as much material as possible to be rescued from the schools that were closing or merging, so that it could be catalogued and exhibited in a suitably arranged space.
Skriperó was chosen as the seat because of its favourable geographical position, and also because the village’s primary school had closed three years earlier and all its old school material had remained in place. The idea was supported by the then Municipality of Palaiokastritsa and by the primary education system of Corfu, which facilitated the collection of archive material.
The museum has operated since October 2009. The building belongs to the Municipality of Corfu, which also covers the running costs. Admission is free for everyone. The museum cooperates with the Department of Museology of the Ionian University on research and on the presentation of the history of education, and it belongs to the museum collections of the university. Because of its audiovisual equipment, it also hosts cultural events, both inside and outside the building.
