About the museum
The collection of icons and relics at Ekatontapiliani began in the early 20th century, on the initiative of the archimandrite and parish priest Georgios Skaramagkas (1867–1944). It included works that had been in the church for centuries and icons from churches in Parikia, and it was enriched by donations. Around 1931 the archaeologist Eirini Varoucha Christodoulopoulou organised the first museum in the ground-floor cells of the north wing. After Skaramagkas's death the museum closed; later it operated briefly in the south wing and closed again.
In April 1993 the Second Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities restored a partial exhibition, and the present exhibition was opened on 21 May 1996. In the first room mainly icons are displayed, in a small chapel woodcarvings, and in the third room vestments, buckles, other church relics and the carved wooden epitaphios (Holy Week bier) of the church. Two smaller halls house silverwork. The remaining relics are kept in a cell of the complex until they have been conserved and can be exhibited.
