About the museum

The museum was created by the teacher and collector Dimitris Panagiotidis and his wife. Their effort began in the early 1980s, when the couple started to gather old objects, and the first wax figures were made from 1983. The present building was erected in the early 2000s with funding from the LEADER programme, and the official opening took place in 2009.

On three floors and in the courtyard, more than 100 life-size wax figures, together with original furniture and objects, present the traditional way of life, customs and old trades. Visitors see the wedding feast with a small orchestra, the dowry room, the kitchen, the larder, the bread-kneading room with the wood-fired oven, the guest room (kalo onta), the loom room and the grandparents' room. Inside there are also figures of prehistoric fishermen of Lake Kastoria.

In the back courtyard, the square of a pre-war village has been laid out, with a barber's shop, a shoemaker's, a cartwright's and a kiosk. The owners themselves guide visitors and recount the stories of the museum's “heroes”.
