A vándorló bánya titkai

The Bükkábrány exhibition gives insight into the open-cast lignite mine, the archaeological excavation beside the mine and the traditions of mining.

Opening hours

About the museum

The fan-shaped lignite mine at Bükkábrány cuts a fan-shaped trace into the landscape: on one side it keeps opening, while on the other it closes behind and the area is restored, so the mine moves on. Before the machines take possession of a new area, archaeologists explore it, so the largest-scale excavation in Hungary takes place here.

The exhibition shows some of the finds from the excavations in the main building, and the open air has large mining installations and machines. Among the finds, the group of swamp-cypress trunks found at a depth of 60 metres, about seven million years old, is famous. The exhibition was awarded the title Év kiállítása (Exhibition of the Year) in 2021.

The exhibition is divided into three units: the part on the work of archaeologists and the traces of Neolithic life (“Az igazság odalent van?” – “Is the truth down there?”), the part presenting the excavated heritage and the secrets of the mine (“A titkos 12”), and the part recalling mining traditions (“Jó szerencsét!” – “Good luck!”). The building and the open-air exhibition site are located on the western edge of the settlement, along main road 3.
