About the museum
Aelium Salla was a Roman-era town on the site of today’s Zalalövő, at the junction of the Borostyánkő-út (Amber Road) and the east–west route along the Zala. On the northern bank of the Zala a legionary camp was established at the beginning of the 1st century, and a settlement grew up beside it, to which Emperor Hadrianus granted town status in 124. Germanic attacks destroyed it in the middle of the 2nd century; in the 4th century it briefly revived, and after the Roman withdrawal it was abandoned in the 5th century. Archaeological excavations were carried out in the town in the 1980s and 1990s; a significant part of the find material can be seen in the Göcseji Múzeum (Göcseji Museum) in Zalaegerszeg.
The Salla Múzeum (Salla Museum) is a branch of the Göcseji Múzeum in Zalalövő, operated by the “Salla” Művelődési Központ (“Salla” Cultural Centre). The permanent exhibition, opened in 1999 under the title “Zala megye római kora” (“The Roman Age of Zala County”), presents in three rooms the Roman burial customs of the county, everyday objects and the furnishing of a Roman house with an atrium. In the first room there are gravestones, including a stele from Zalabaksa with a hunting scene, and a small stone coffin (ossuarium); in the third room, the central display case holds trade goods, amphorae and terra sigillata vessels.
In the ruin garden the greater part of the fourth-century way station, the rooms of a second-century townhouse with a bath, and a section of the Amber Road with its original paving can be seen. The fourth-century building, founded at a depth of 270 cm, was larger than any public building in present-day Zalalövő. The visit includes the nearby Tájház (Village Heritage House) with the same ticket.
