About the museum
After the Ottoman occupation, Harruckern János György received the estate covering much of Békés County, and the Baroque building block of the Gyula manor was built by his son, Harruckern Ferenc. His grandson, Wenckheim Ferenc, expanded it into a noble residence, built a riding hall beside it, and planted exotic plants in the park and the winter garden. Through the marriage of Countess Wenckheim Stefánia and Almásy Kálmán, the manor came into the possession of the Almásy family. After 1945 it was nationalised, and housed a skilled workers' training school, a nursing school, a dormitory and then an infants' home; in the 1960s a thermal bath opened in most of the park. In the 1990s the manor was gradually emptied, and by 2016 the building had been renovated.
Several rulers stayed within its walls: in 1807 I. Ferenc, in 1857 Ferenc József and Queen Erzsébet. In August 1849, ten of the thirteen generals of Arad laid down their swords here. A play was already performed in the manor in 1746, and Munkácsy Mihály began studying painting here. The renovation received the ICOMOS award in 2017, and in 2018 it was among the nominees for the European Museum of the Year Award.
