Erkel Ferenc Emlékház

The Gyula birthplace of the composer of the national anthem: a school and teacher’s residence built in 1795, with an interactive exhibition and the family’s Biedermeier living quarters.

Opening hoursAdmission HUF 2,600

About the museum

The house was built in 1795 as a school and a teacher’s residence; after it collapsed in 1830, it was rebuilt in Classicist style. Erkel Ferenc was born here in 1810 in a corner room; the family lived in the building from 1808 to 1841. The first memorial plaque was placed on the wall in 1893, and in 1910 a new one was put up in its place.

The present exhibition presents the life of the composer, the creation of the Himnusz (national anthem) and the history of education in 19th-century Gyula; the furnishing of the living quarters recalls the Biedermeier home of the period.
