About the museum
The building had operated as a hotel in Keszthely since at least 1715; in 1798 Csokonai Vitéz Mihály stayed here, which is commemorated by a plaque. Later a coach relay station operated in it, and Keszthely's first petrol station also opened here.
The exhibition “Főúri utazások, úti kalandok” (Aristocratic Journeys, Travel Adventures) opened in 2016 on the ground and first floors of the building. The interactive presentation traces travel over past centuries through the world of carriages, ships, cars and aeroplanes: the contents of travel trunks, the dangers of the road network and the changing travel habits with the spread of the railway. The exhibition displays a Louis Vuitton suitcase once owned by III. Festetics György, a model of the steerable, metal-framed airship of Schwartz Dávid, born in Keszthely, a restored saloon railway carriage, and period cars and bicycles. Visitors can also try out a carriage simulator and a ship's wheel.
