Orsósmagnó Múzeum

About the museum

The Orsósmagnó Múzeum (Reel Tape Recorder Museum) was opened on 11 May 2002 by Dr. Vámos Éva, then director-general of the Országos Műszaki Múzeum. At the opening it was emphasised that the museum had been created entirely from family funds. To cover at least part of the maintenance costs, a foundation was set up on 11 April 2003, whose founder is Nagy Vilmos. The museum is today located in Keszthely, on Bem József utca.

The museum presents the history of Hungarian and international tape recorder manufacturing through reel-to-reel and wire recorders. The significant growth of the collection was due to Csoknyai György, a visitor arriving from the United States, who donated almost a hundred special, rare wire and reel recorders; according to the founder, this made it the largest such collection in the world. The pieces are currently being catalogued, photographed and documented, and will later be made accessible in an online database.

For the full sound experience, a visit with a guided tour is recommended: the veteran devices play one after another, and the guide tells stories about the Hungarian pioneers of sound technology, for example Jánosi Marcell and the Vörös Szikra tape recorder. Visits to the museum require an appointment in advance.
