About the museum
The Aquincum Museum opened in 1894 to display archaeological finds made in Budapest. Budapest is the only European capital north of Rome that can present its Roman heritage to visitors over a large connected area, which is why Aquincum is often called the “Hungarian Pompeii”. The museum's collection now numbers in the millions, and it operates as an institution of the Budapest History Museum.
The archaeological park shows the street network, house foundations and stone collection of the civilian town. Here is the Festőház (Painter's House), a Roman-style house built and furnished after Roman models, and the Symphorus Mithraeum, which presents the cult of Mithras in Aquincum. In the museum buildings are the world-famous Aquincum organ, memorabilia from the governor's palace, the Látványraktár with around 1,400 objects, and a permanent exhibition on Roman military life.
The Aquincum Museum can be visited with the BTM+ ticket, shared with the other institutions of the Budapest History Museum. The Hercules Villa and the Fürdő Múzeum (Bath Museum) are separate exhibition venues with their own opening hours and tickets.
