About the museum
The predecessor of the Óbudai Múzeum was established in 1973, on the hundredth anniversary of the unification of Pest, Buda and Óbuda, as the Óbudai Helytörténeti Gyűjtemény (Óbuda Local History Collection). It became independent in 1994, and in 1996 the Művelődési Minisztérium (Ministry of Culture) declared it a museum. The institution is maintained by the district local government; in 2008 it was merged with the Platán Könyvtár (Platán Library).
The permanent urban-history exhibition Óbuda – Egy város három arca (“Óbuda – A City with Three Faces”) presents the settlement’s thousand-year history from the Middle Ages to the change of regime: the medieval royal centre, the era of the Zichy family, the industrialisation after the 1873 unification of the cities, viticulture and the world of small pubs, as well as urban clearances and life on the housing estates. In the underground exhibition Templomok a talpunk alatt (“Churches Under Our Feet”), the remains of medieval Óbuda’s churches can be seen in their original locations.
The museum has collected toys since its foundation. The Játék a városban (“Toys in the City”) exhibition, opened in 2016, is based on this collection and presents, through nearly 1,500 objects, the toys of bourgeois and socialist times from the 1890s to the change of regime. The Goldberger Textilipari Gyűjtemény (Goldberger Textile Industry Collection) on Lajos utca is also maintained by the museum.
