About the museum
The Varga Imre Gyűjtemény is located in Laktanya utca in Óbuda; it is an exhibition venue of the Budapest Galéria of the Budapesti Történeti Múzeum (Budapest History Museum). The collection presents the oeuvre of the sculptor Varga Imre (born in Siófok, 1923).
Varga Imre graduated from a military aviation academy and served as an air force officer in the Second World War; he returned home from captivity in 1945. A chance encounter with the sculptor Pátzay Pál led him to the Képzőművészeti Főiskola (College of Fine Arts). While still a student, he was included with his sculpture “Vasmunkás” in the first Hungarian fine arts exhibition.
The website of the Budapest Galéria also publishes material on the renewed version of the permanent exhibition, on the collection and on the artist's biography; educational programmes for the museum are also linked to the collection.
