About the museum
The Ásványmúzeum (Mineral Museum) has been open to visitors since June 1986 in the centre of Siófok, on Kálmán Imre promenade. This state-protected private collection is the work of Kövecses-Varga Lajos and his family: the collector was born in 1957 in Lovászpatona and has been collecting the minerals of historic Hungary for more than three decades. The museum is still maintained by the family, and the stock grows year by year.
Around three thousand minerals are displayed in 54 display cases in five rooms. The rooms present the minerals of Hungary, the wider world, the Felvidék (Upper Hungary), Kapnikbánya and the other Transylvanian localities. The collection’s speciality is the complete Transylvanian “bányavirág” collection and several reference specimens, such as the first examples of kochsándorite, discovered by the collector in 2001. The museum shows part of a private collection: the owner’s more than ten thousand minerals are still waiting for a display space.
