Bábolnai Ménesudvar

The historic court of the nearly 230-year-old Bábolna stud farm, with a stud history exhibition, a carriage collection and the Simkó Africa Hunting Museum.

About the museum

For almost two hundred years, the Bábolna National Stud Farm has been the centre for breeding Arabian thoroughbreds, Shagya Arabians and English thoroughbreds. The Ménesudvar (stud court) is surrounded by an impressive group of buildings, whose central element is a manor house built in the early 1700s; the complex assumed its present form after renovations in the 1810s. The statue of a saddled horse under the castle gate commemorates “the most loyal companion”; beside it stands an old acacia planted in 1710, the oldest acacia tree in Central Europe.

The visit to the stud farm begins with an exhibition on the history of the stud, where memorabilia, decorative cups, harnesses of various driving styles and the instruments of the mounted band are on display. In the Ménesudvar, opposite the riding hall, stands the Heroes' Gate, and beside it the carriage collection of some fifteen carriages of various ages and types. Since 2019, the Simkó Afrika Vadászmúzeum (Simkó Africa Hunting Museum) has operated on the ground floor of the manor house. It presents a trophy collection of nearly one hundred animals hunted by Simkó Gyula on his African hunting expeditions.
