About the museum
The Klapka György Museum was founded in Komárom in 1965. Its offices and permanent exhibitions moved in 2023 to the Brigetio Öröksége Visitor Centre; the former main building on Kelemen László utca is no longer open to visitors. The visitor centre building was constructed in 1907 as the Komárom main building of the Hungarian Royal State Stud Department; later it was used by a state farm and then by an agricultural combine. The town bought the empty building in 2011, and the conversion into a museum began in 2016.
On the ground floor of the visitor centre is the archaeological exhibition Brigetio öröksége (The Heritage of Brigetio), which presents the finds of the research carried out at Brigetio since 1992, based on the joint work of the Eötvös Loránd University and the museum. The exhibition is interactive: a QR-code multimedia guide and a virtual reality game lead visitors through a Roman town. Further permanent exhibitions present György Klapka, the hero of Komárom, the history of the building, and the open archaeological storage.
