About the museum
The predecessor of Csillagerőd (Star Fort) was the Ottoman-era Szent Péter-palánk (Szent Péter Palisade), which later got its name from its floor plan in the shape of a four-pointed star. In the 1848–49 War of Independence, Görgei Artúr followed the events of the Battle of Komárom from here, and Klapka György bid farewell to his soldiers here.
The fort, converted into a stone and brick structure by 1870, was used as a barracks and depot during the Monarchy; from the end of 1944 an internment camp operated in it. After the Second World War, emergency housing was created inside, and later it served as a store for vegetables and food.
Renovated under the Liget Budapest programme, the fort now presents a selection of the century-old plaster-cast collection of the Szépművészeti Múzeum in Budapest. The roughly three hundred copies range from archaic Greek sculpture to the 16th century; they include the equestrian statues of Donatello’s Gattamelata and Verrocchio’s Colleoni, the Laocoön Group and Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise.
