About the museum
The Igmándi Erőd is the youngest and smallest member of the Komárom fortress system, standing near the Rüdiger lake. It was built in the 1870s and reached its final form by 1877; its design aimed to ensure, with more modern military technology, the same density of fire with fewer soldiers at fewer loopholes as in the large forts.
Until 1939 army depots operated in it; from spring 1941 to 1942 it was a Polish military internment camp. After the Second World War it became a verification and accounting camp for civilians and soldiers returning from the West, and after 1948 emergency housing was created in part of it for families who had become homeless.
Visitors today can see the civil defence shelter built during the Cold War and an emergency dwelling; the fort also houses the Roman-era stone collection of the Komárom Klapka György Múzeum.
