About the museum
The Bakonyi Természettudományi Múzeum (Bakony Natural History Museum) was established in Zirc in 1972 as the only regional natural-history specialist museum in Hungary. Several decades of research and collecting made possible the permanent exhibition presenting the natural values of the Bakony, located on the first floor of the Zirc Cistercian Abbey building.
The dioramas in the exhibition show the communities and protected areas of the characteristic Bakony landscapes. The mineral exhibition selects rarities of the Carpathian Basin; the trophy exhibition shows game from the Bakony and more distant landscapes; and the Jégkorszaki óriások (Giants of the Ice Age) exhibition contains the complete skeletons of two mammoths, named Tonna and Mázsa. In 2002 the museum received the Pro Natura Award. It belongs to the Magyar Természettudományi Múzeum of the Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum Közgyűjteményi Központ (Central Collection Centre of the Hungarian National Museum), and it coordinates the Bakony research, which has been running for more than fifty years.
