About the museum
The Beethoven Emlékmúzeum was established in 1958 to present the close relationship between the composer and the Brunszvik family and, through it, Beethoven’s ties to Hungary. News of its foundation was published by the Magyar Nemzet in December 1957. In the same year the summer Beethoven evenings began on the island in the castle park, and they still recall the composer’s memory with concerts.
The collection is housed in the oldest part of the Brunszvik Castle. The Brunszvik family acquired the Martonvásár estate in 1758, and the castle was later remodelled several times. The memorial museum’s exhibition was renovated in 1973 and again in 1989; since 1988 its maintenance has belonged to the research institute operating in the castle.
The exhibition was renewed with interactive elements in 2020, for the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. It answers whether Beethoven visited Martonvásár, whom he befriended here and which works he composed here, while also presenting the history of the place and of the Brunszvik family. Only the part of the castle that houses the memorial museum is open to visitors.
