About the museum
The museum is named after Matrica, the Roman-era settlement on the territory of Százhalombatta. The institution was founded by the town council, which still maintains it. In the 1980s members of the “Matrica” Honismereti Szakkör (Local Heritage Circle) collected the archaeological finds that emerged during urban construction, and this formed the basis of the local history collection. From 1984 the museum was built up under the leadership of archaeologist and museologist Poroszlai Ildikó.
The first exhibition opened in December 1987 in a late-19th-century manor building. The building was renovated between 2005 and 2007, and the current permanent exhibition has been on view since 2009.
The exhibition takes visitors through a single undivided space from the Ice Age to the 19th century, with a timeline and scenes from everyday life. It is supplemented by interactive elements, a digital catalogue on tablets and a treasure-hunt game. In the museum garden, stone monuments from the Roman military camp and cemetery of Matrica can be seen.
