About the museum
The museum presents the history of Hungarian early-childhood education, starting with the kindergarten that Brunszvik Teréz opened in Buda in 1828, the first kindergarten in Central Europe. The objects, books, photographs, documents and toys in the exhibition evoke life in earlier and more recent kindergartens, while the teaching aids and activity materials follow the development of early-childhood education in Hungary.
The collection was initiated by the retired kindergarten head Harcsa Tiborné, who for years collected the memorabilia of kindergarten history. The museum received its operating licence in 1990 in Nyíregyháza, and in 1995 it moved to Martonvásár, the settlement of Brunszvik Teréz, pioneer of Hungarian early-childhood education. Its maintaining body is the Martonvásár Town Council.
The exhibition leads up to the day-care kindergarten of the 1950s and 1960s, with period interiors illustrating each era. The museum also has a documentation archive, a photo archive and a specialist library of around five thousand volumes. The Óvodamúzeum is near the Brunszvik Castle, the Beethoven Memorial Museum and the castle park.
