About the museum
Collecting for the Hajdúszoboszló museum began in 1957, on the initiative of history teacher Dr. Juhász Imre and the local history study circle of his students. The first exhibition opened in 1958. The museum is named after Bocskai István, the Transylvanian prince who settled the hajdús at Szoboszló. In 1964 it received an operating licence and joined the Hajdú-Bihar Megyei Múzeumok Igazgatósága (Hajdú-Bihar County Museums Directorate); Dr. Juhász Imre led it from 1964 to 2005. Since 2013 it has been maintained by the Hajdúszoboszló Város Önkormányzata (Municipality of Hajdúszoboszló); its director since 2014 has been Dr. Bihari-Horváth László.
The museum stands in the centre of the town, in the immediate vicinity of the town hall. Its permanent exhibitions present the town’s past, traditions and literary heritage; alongside them the Fejedelmi Kincstár (Princely Treasury) and the Nemzetközi Modern Képtár (International Modern Gallery) can also be visited. The Cseh Gusztáv-emlékszoba (Cseh Gusztáv Memorial Room) is also open to visitors, and the Retró ’70–’89 exhibition evokes the everyday life of the recent past.
Alongside the exhibitions, the museum also offers a virtual tour and a sculpture walk.
