About the museum
The museum is named after Semsey Andor, a local landowner and great patron of Hungarian science and culture. Today it is housed on the ground floor of the Semsey Castle in Balmazújváros: based on the style of this two-storey classicist mansion, it can be dated to the 1840s; it is a protected historic monument and was renovated in 2012–2013. The museum moved in at the end of 2013, and in 2014 it regained its status as a regional museum (területi múzeum).
The permanent exhibition on the ground floor bears the title “Ember és környezete a Hortobágy mellékén” (Man and His Environment on the Edge of the Hortobágy). Its sections offer insight into the past of the town and its surroundings, the ethnography of the area around the Hortobágy, its flora and fauna, and the crafts of the hatmaker, blacksmith, wheelwright and harness-maker. A separate Semsey room preserves the memory of the namesake.
