About the museum
Within the territory of Karos stood the first princely centre of the Hungarians of the conquest period. In 1936 thirteen conquest-period graves were found in the 1st cemetery on the village boundary; between 1986 and 1992 the 2nd and 3rd cemeteries were also excavated, with 73 and 19 graves respectively. As a result of these excavations, the world’s richest 10th-century Hungarian graves came to light at Karos.
On the Eperjesszög hill, where the graves were found, one of the country’s first 10th-century cemetery gardens was established in 2002; since 2006 it has held the status of National Cemetery Garden (Nemzeti Sírkert). In 1998 a petition was started so that the Karos finds could be seen in an exhibition venue built in Karos; the Visitor Centre opened on 16 September 2012.
Seen from the front, the yurt-shaped building forms a Hungarian recurve bow, and its dome symbolises a quiver of arrows. On the upper floor there is a panoptic exhibition with life-size figures and horses, automated narration and light effects. On the ground floor, interactive devices, original objects and replicas present the 10th century. In the outdoor park, animals, yurts and 10th-century house reconstructions can be seen; the centre also offers mounted and archery demonstrations, archery and craft sessions.
