About the museum
The collection grew out of the local Sporttörténeti Bizottság (Sports History Committee), set up in 1978; the collection opened in 1992. The museum primarily presents the development of the town’s sport from the mid-19th century to the present day, and holds several thousand relics and some 17 thousand photographs.
The permanent exhibition is in the Szondy István and Zsengellér Gyula rooms, in 51 glass cabinets and 15 table cases. Particular prominence is given to Szondy István, Ungvári Miklós, Lőrincz Tamás, Csernai Tibor, Gál József, Paralympic competitors, Pálinkás László and Bíró Norbert; according to the museum, 24 athletes from Cegléd have taken part in the Olympic Games.
The museum also looks after some of the town’s sports memorial sites, such as the pantheon in the courtyard of the town hall, the honours board of Olympians in the Gál József Sportcsarnok and the tomb of Zsengellér Gyula. The collection is part of the Ceglédi Értéktár (Cegléd Heritage Register).
