About the museum
The Abonyi Lajos Falumúzeum (village museum) was founded in 1959 with the aim of saving the tools of the tanya farming of a settlement on the Great Plain that was once 22 thousand hold (an old Hungarian unit of land) in size and is disappearing. Alongside the everyday objects of rural life, the collection also preserves the memory of the area’s some fifteen hundred tanyas and their inhabitants.
After a two-year renovation of the granary built by the Csák kindred, the museum’s new exhibition opened in August 1983. On the ground floor are the tools of harvesting, threshing and grain cleaning, harvest wreaths, and the tools of tanya animal husbandry and viticulture. On the upper floor are the workshops of a rope-maker, a strap-maker, a weaver and a shoemaker, as well as a kitchen and pantry, preserving and dairy-processing equipment, and the tools used for pig slaughter.
In the shed of the farmyard stand farm vehicles, ploughs, seeders, a chaff cutter, a field furnace, a smithy, a complete threshing set and a former fire-engine cart. In the courtyard there are a shadoof well (gémeskút), a dovecote and a cauldron for cooking jam; the farm servants’ bell from the estate of the Harkány baron can be rung at noon. On the site of the brickworks a separate brick store also belongs to the exhibition venue.
