About the museum
The Kossuth Múzeum in Cegléd was founded in 1917 and is one of the oldest institutions in Cegléd. With its name, the founders wanted to commemorate not only Kossuth Lajos but the whole family: Kossuth Ferenc was also closely connected with the political and social life of Cegléd. As one of the largest public collections in Pest County, it has for several decades collected and preserved objects of local history, ethnography, numismatics, fine arts and archaeology.
Among the collections, the ethnographic material documents the 19th- and 20th-century way of life of the agricultural population of Cegléd and the Tápió region. The fine arts collection contains depictions of Kossuth and more than eighty paintings by Benedek Péter; the numismatic collection preserves Kossuth money, such as the American “Kossuth dollars”, and local decorations. The historical object collection includes items of use and furniture belonging to Kossuth Lajos, as well as the writing desk of Kossuth Ferenc.
The permanent exhibition, “Tükör valék…”, presents the life of Kossuth Lajos, his political work, his efforts for Hungarian independence, and his national and local cult. The Cegléd tradition of the Kossuth cult was included in the Hungarian national register of UNESCO intangible cultural heritage in 2014. The museum also offers temporary exhibitions, museum education sessions and publications.
