About the museum
The Csonka János Emlékmúzeum (János Csonka Memorial Museum) opened in Budapest, in District XI, in 2012, on the 160th anniversary of the birth of the mechanical engineer (1852–1939). The museum is in the house on Bartók Béla út where the inventor’s original car-repair workshop and later his machine factory operated.
János Csonka is best known as the co-inventor of the carburettor, but he also took part in drafting the first traffic regulations, in introducing driving instruction and in organising the petrol-station network. His name is linked to the first Hungarian motor vehicle, a motorised mail-collecting tricycle built in 1900 to the order of the Post.
The museum displays a surviving example of a 1905 parcel-carrying mail coach built to Csonka’s plans. Documents, personal objects, medals and photographs from the family estate have been added to the collection; original engines and machine tools can also be seen, along with a 1909 single-cylinder small car.
