About the museum

The Múzeum Mikuláša Thegeho Konkolyho v Hurbanove (Mikuláš Konkoly-Thege Museum in Hurbanovo) was established on 13 April 2006, when it was entered in the Register of Museums and Galleries as a museum of astronomy with nationwide competence. It is organisationally part of the Slovenská ústredná hvezdáreň (Slovak Central Observatory). The architect Milan Veselý is the author of the artistic and technical design of the exhibition.

The observatory grounds have existed for more than 145 years and consist of several historic buildings that still serve today: the building of the old observatory, the Heydeho kupola (Heyde Dome) and the spectrographic pavilion. It is the oldest observatory in Slovakia, and the museum aims to give visitors a comprehensive picture of the history of astronomy on the territory of Slovakia.

In the exhibition hall of the historic building there are period photographs of the park and grounds, the family tree of Count Konkoly, rotating star maps and a collection of meteorites from around the world. The visit also includes a tour of the historic building and, weather permitting, observation of the Sun through a telescope, as well as a programme in the digital planetarium.
